The Best Drugstore Makeup Dupes for High-End Makeup

Popular Beauty Blogger Lauren Meyer of The Lo Meyer Blog shares The Best Drugstore Makeup Dupes for High-End Makeup

For the longest time, buying high-end makeup was a point of pride for me. In some cases, high-end makeup really is the best option. There are instances when the quality is better, and it lasts longer. But, after experimenting with quite a few drugstore products over the last few months,  there are a lot of instances when budget friendly alternatives perform just as well, if not better than their high-end counterparts. And, let’s be honest, if I can save a few bucks on makeup here and there, that leaves more money for the important things in life. Like shoes 😉

When I shared the drugstore foundation I’ve been using lately (and loving!) on Instagram stories last week, you all LOVED it! So many messages rolled in with requests to share all of my drugstore faves immediately. So, I’m excited to share a whole round up here! I’m giving my honest opinion on the best drugstore makeup dupes and also letting you know what products I think are worth paying a bit more for.

All of my drugstore to high-end dupes are in the graphics below separated by categories! Click on each image in the photo or product name below to shop! I’ve detailed my top finds at the bottom as well as the items that didn’t make the cut!

High End: Make Up Forever Primer | Estée Lauder Foundation | Bobbi Brown Under Eye Corrector | Kat Von D Translucent Powder

Drugstore: NYX Honey Dew Me UpL’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte | Pixi Color Corrector | NYX HD Finishing Powder

High End: Urban Decay Beached Bronzer | Tarte Blush | Tarte Highlight | Urban Decay Setting Spray

Drugstore: Milani Baked Bronzer | Milani Baked Blush | E.L.F. Highlight | NYX Matte Setting Spray

High End: Urban Decay Naked Basics | STILA Liquid Eyeliner | Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz | Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Drugstore: NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette |L’Oréal Infallible Super Slim Liquid Eyeliner | NYX Micro Brow Pencil | L’Oréal Lash Paradise Mascara

L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte ($13) dupe for Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place ($42)

Let me start off by saying, I am FIERCELY loyal to my Estée Lauder foundation. Or, I was. Prior to trying the L’Oréal Infallible, I had been using the Estée Lauder foundation for 2 years and had raved about it more than once on the blog and Instagram. Don’t get me wrong, it is a very good foundation. It’s mattifying, long wearing and doesn’t oxidize (turn orange throughout the day). But, the L’Oréal foundation is also just as mattifying, long lasting, doesn’t oxidize, AND it costs $13 as opposed to $43. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that this was literally the same product in different packaging. And, I think the L’Oréal is more mattifying over a longer period of time!

A few things to note: First, I have very sensitive, acne prone skin. Neither foundation broke me out. Second, both foundations have a range of shades to cover any skin type. I am neutral toned and, although the Estée Lauder definitely has a greater range of shades, I feel the L’Oréal foundation is neutral enough it can work for yellow, red or neutral undertones. (Foundation Pro-Tip: when in doubt, always go with a neutral shade!). I am currently between shade 106 and 107 of the L’Oréal depending on how tan I am and am shade 3N1 in Estée.

NYX Micro Brow Pencil ($10) dupe for Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ($21)

NYX is like high-end makeup disguised in drugstore packaging. The quality is hard to beat! Before trying their Micro Brow Pencil, I had been using various Anastasia Beverly Hill pencils (the Wiz then the Definer). Both are great, but rather pricey. One thing that always turned me off from drugstore brow pencils was that I felt they were either always too warm toned or not pigmented enough. The NYX pencil is a different story. Ever since I tried the NYX pencil in Ash Brown, I haven’t even considered picking up the more expensive, Anastasia alternative. It is a true dupe and saves you about $10 dollars. In my opinion, Ash Brown will work for most dirty blonde – darker brown tones as it’s easy to build upon to make it darker and is a true “ash” color (more cool v. warm toned).

NYX HD Finish Powder ($10) dupe for Kat Von D Translucent Powder ($30)

One of my first posts on the blog detailed my foundation routine, and translucent powder is a big step for me. I use it to set the concealer on my under-eye as well as on my lids before applying eyeshadow. Many people use it to set their whole face; however, I use a powder foundation for that. Now, I still have the same pot of Kat Von D powder I featured in this post. A little goes a long way, and it lasts forever. So you do truly get a lot for what you pay for. But, that being said, NYX works just as well and lasts just as long. It also does a great job at keeping you matte throughout the day. So, when I know I’ll be in humid conditions, I’ll often apply the NYX powder to my t-zone to avoid any excess oil.

L’Oréal Infallible Super Slim Liquid Eyeliner ($9) dupe for STILA Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($22)

Although I don’t often do a full winged eyeliner look anymore, I often like to line my upper lid with liquid liner. Given I have lighter colored lashes, I find this makes my eyes pop a bit more and accentuates my lashes. A girlfriend of mine, who is a pro at winged eyeliner, recommended Stila to me. She’s a med school resident and swears that Stila lasts all day. And, my thoughts are, if it lasts for someone who works as hard as med students do, it’ll probably work for the average Joe! But, the price tag always got me! When I discovered the L’Oréal dupe, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it lasts just as long as the Stila but costs only $9. I’m on my second L’Oréal Eyeliner and don’t plan on going back!

Here are some items that I didn’t find a good drugstore alternative for:

I tried, but always go back to the Becca Aqua Luminous Concealer I’ve been using since last Fall. The reason being that it’s super hydrating and provides great coverage. So it works for both under-eye and blemishes. If you’re looking for a drugstore option, I suggest using Maybelline Instant Age Rewind for under-eye and Maybelline Fit Me for blemishes. The Age Rewind is great for covering dark circles but not pigmented enough for blemishes. Whereas the Fit Me I found to be too drying on the under-eye and can leave you with a “cakey/creasy” effect.

I have tried 3-4 different lash primers but ALWAYS go back to Benefit Tinted Lash Primer. It’s the only one that separates and lengthens lashes but doesn’t cause your mascara to clump. Although L’Oréal makes a great Lash Primer, I found that it caused my mascara to become very clumpy over time. It’s as if some of the primer rubbed off on my mascara wand and ruined the product. Plus, the Benefit primer is tinted and is great for giving you that “no makeup makeup” look on days when you’re trying to look put together but don’t feel like going the whole nine yards!

I am sticking with my powder Benefit foundation. It lasts forever, so I’m okay paying the price because I know I’ll have it for years. Like I mentioned above, I like to use a powder foundation over my liquid to really help set everything in place. I found that a lot of the drugstore powder foundations I tried gave me a very cakey appearance and weren’t flattering. The Benefit is very natural yet pigmented. Something that’s hard to come by. This one is worth paying a bit more for!

My favorite brow gel from Anastasia Beverly Hills just can’t be beat. It’s like super glue for your brows. After you fill in your brows, you apply this overtop to hold the hairs in place and make sure the product doesn’t smudge. I’ve tried other more budget-friendly products but they fail to keep the hairs or product in place. This is another one that I’m happy to pay a bit more for. Luckily, it lasts a long time. The last tube I picked up in October 2017 is still going strong!

And, lastly, I’m still loving the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick. It’s the only one I’ve found that lasts literally all day  – no matter how much you eat or drink – without getting flakey or dry. If you’re looking for similar shades at a better price, I suggest trying out NYX’s line of liquid lipsticks. However, they do not last nearly as long and you have to reapply after eating or drinking!

Phew! That got quite lengthy, but there’s so much to share I didn’t want to miss anything! I hope you all found this helpful! You can find most of these products at Sephora, Ulta (they have both high-end and drugstore products) or Target!

And, as a friendly reminder, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale ends THIS Sunday! Head here to read all of my posts for the sale and stay tuned Sunday for one last roundup of in stock items!

The Best Pink & Nude Lipsticks on a Budget

Beauty Blogger Lauren Meyer Shares The Best Pink & Nude Lipsticks on a Budget Beauty Blogger Lauren Meyer Shares The Best Pink & Nude Lipsticks on a Budget

Happy Friday Everyone!

You may have noticed from my photos or Insta that I’m a bit of a fan of a good lippie! I tend to wear darker colors in cool weather and change to nude/pinks in warmer weather. I actually have two different drawers in my makeup organizer for darker and lighter lip colors! And (thankfully), it’s getting to be that time of year to start pulling out the Spring and Summer colors!

Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t always have to spend a ton of money for a good quality lip color. This is especially true of lighter colors. I find that buying higher-end darker lip colors often means better pigment and longer lasting color. However, I feel that lighter lip colors are on a bit more of an even playing field where drugstore v. high-end is concerned.

So, I rounded up 6 Spring & Summer lip colors that are perfect for warm weather and right on budget! For tips and tricks to keep your color even and lasting all day, be sure to check out this post.

Before we get to the colors themselves, know that I often like to line my lips when I use a lighter lip color. I find this helps the color last longer and appear more pigmented! This is my favorite liner because it’s waterproof and lasts forever! I often will just use it on it’s own with this gloss overtop.

Beauty Blogger Lauren Meyer shares 5The Best Pink & Nude Lipsticks on a Budget

  1. The Best Light Nude Lip Color: Maybelline Nude Lust has been my go-to for a neutral, nude lip for the last few years. It’s the perfect neutral color to go with almost any skin tone! And, coming in at under $6, you can’t beat the price! Maybelline Born With It is a pinker color that’s also another Summer go-to for me! With both of these, I do use a lip liner as they are regular lipsticks so they can fade with eating and drinking. Wearing lipliner helps decrease the chance of fading!
  2. The Best Darker Nude Lip Color: Earlier this Spring, I mentioned on Instagram that Tarte Birthday Suit was the perfect pinky nude. It is! However, NYX Push-Up is the perfect dupe, and the better option coming in under $7! NYX Push-Up is a matte liquid lip and lasted me through an entire date night with only reapplying once! You definitely should exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub (like the DIY one I mention in this post!) to avoid flaking and caking given the matte texture.
  3. The Best Shimmer Pink: If you watched my stories while we were in Sanibel (or looked at any of the photos in this post), there’s a good chance I’m wearing this $14 liquid lip from Sephora (shade 05). It is literally THE perfect everyday shimmer lip color for warm weather! It lasts through anything, never flakes or cakes, and you can’t beat the price for the quality!
  4. The Perfect Coral Pink: Clove + Hallow’s Creamsicle is the coral color I have been searching for! This is literally Summer in a lipstick. It’s the perfect shade for a lunch date or a night out. The formula is creamy and hydrating. Plus, Clove + Hallow makes only all-natural products. So you can feel good and look good in this color!
  5. The Best Bright Pink: I picked up Lipland’s Nova while I was shopping at Riley Rose last week and am hooked on this color! It’s definitely a statement making lip color and is another shade that just epitomizes Summer! I wore it out for date night on Friday and never had to reapply (so amazing!). If you’re looking for a classic pink, this is the one for you!
  6. The Best Gloss: I had never been a big gloss girl until I tried this lip gloss from NYX. Now I’m hooked. Like I mentioned before, I regularly wear it over liner (any color!) and on it’s own. The color Creme Brulee is my favorite because it’s the perfect pinky nude color for everyday wear. Their formula is also somehow hydrating without being sticky, which is another huge plus in my book!

Best Beauty Products for a Beach Vacation

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

Happy Friday everyone!

I hope you all have had an amazing week! We’ve been enjoying our vacay in Sanibel and are so sad that we’re back to snowy MN today. Did you see that we got 5 inches of snow earlier in the week? So sad that we missed out on that fun time – LOL (#sarcasm).

Anyway! I’m keeping this post rather short today because I’m running on about 5 hours of sleep!  I’ve rounded up a ton of the best beauty products for a beach vacation for today’s post. These are products I brought with me or wish I had brought with me on this trip! I’m detailing my top 3 picks below! You can also click on each image in the collage above to be taken to the product’s page or look above and click on the corresponding number to shop! Most of these items are under $40!

  1. Face Sunscreen: One of my first blog posts was dedicated to sunscreen because it is SO IMPORTANT to use on a daily basis but even more so during a beach vacation. This face sunscreen from Neutrogena is perfect for daily wear because it won’t break you out, is relatively non-greasy (as far as sunscreens go), and provides SPF 55. I also tested out this spray sunscreen that works as a makeup setting spray. It does set your makeup nicely; however, I found that it leaves a weird film on top of your skin if used without makeup. I will still repurchase because I haven’t found a sunscreen you can use over foundation/BB cream without messing it up but will be on the lookout for a different brand to test in the future! PS send me your recs if you have any!!
  2. BB Cream: Who wants to wear a full face of makeup while vacationing? Not I! This BB cream from Maybelline is my go-to in the summer and any beach vacay! It leaves a radiant glow to your face and is surprisingly full coverage while also providing SPF 30. I blend it in using my fingers. When I’m tan I use shade medium and when I’m pale I use the light shade. It’s a very neutral tone so works with most skin tones! And, it’s super affordable! There’s also one with benzoyl peroxide for those with sensitive skin. Although I am acne-prone, I have had no issues with the regular SPF one. However, if you use the one with benzoyl in it BE SURE to also use a sunscreen because benzoyl peroxide can make you more susceptible to sun burn!
  3. A Bright Lip Color: I’ve talked A TON on my Instagram stories this week about Sephora’s cream liquid lipstick line. I’ve owned a few lip colors from this line for over two years but kind of forgot about them to be honest. Not sure why I stopped using them because they’re so creamy, not drying, long lasting AND under $15! I’ve been using shade 05 (shimmery light pink) and shade 06 (matte brighter pink) for this trip for a perfect summer lip color!

These are my recommendations for the best beauty products for a beach vacation! I hope you found this post helpful!

Stay tuned for a huge outfit roundup of my Sanibel outfits on Monday!

5 Face Sunscreens You Need For Summer

If you’re like me, sunscreen is a necessity just about anytime of the year. And I’m not only saying this because I’m naturally as pale as Casper and genetically pre-disposed to skin cancer. I mean, that’s a big part of it, BUT I also believe in preserving my skin to look as youthful as possible for as long as possible. If you expose yourself too much sun over time, you run the risk of having your skin look like your favorite leather bag and, let’s be honest, that’s just not cute. Finding the perfect sunscreen for your face is difficult. But I’ve gathered a list of my top five, non-comedogenic, face sunscreens to get you through this summer and beyond!

I.SUNSCREEN: Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen (55 SPF)

Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen is my go-to sunscreen in the Summer. It’s 55 SPF, break-out free, oil-free and water-resistant. However, although it is lighter-weight than regular sunscreen, it’s still too heavy to wear under a full face of makeup in my opinion. I use this when I’m out on the beach, hiking or having a no-makeup day.

II. PRIMER SUNSCREEN: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (15 SPF)

This primer acts as both a base for your favorite foundation and a sunscreen because it contains 15 SPF. I use this primer a lot in the winter or during the summer when I know I’m going to be in and out of the sun throughout the day (i.e. running errands). This primer also does not cause photo flashback. Flashback is something to watch out for when wearing sunscreen underneath makeup. If you take a photo of yourself with flash on, your face will literally “flashback” and appear A LOT whiter than your body. You may actually look like Casper then! So going with a SPF below 20 when you know you may be taking photos should avoid this issue!

III. BB CREAM: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream (30 SPF)

Sometimes if I’m in a rush or having a lazy day, I’ll throw on a light BB cream and head out the door. Maybelline Dream BB cream is my favorite. Their regular BB cream contains 30 SPF, which is perfect for everyday wear. They also have a BB cream that contains 2% salicylic acid but NO SPF. If you’re a guy or girl that breaks out easily but still wants a lightly tinted cream to even out your skin tone, this is definitely the BB cream for you. Just make sure to use a primer or lotion with SPF since the BB cream doesn’t have it.

IV: TANNER: Jergens Natural Glow Daily Face Moisturizer (20 SPF)

Jergens Natural Glow Face Moisturizer is my go-to all year round and especially in the summer. It creates an even, natural glow while also containing 20 SPF – a win-win, right?! I break out SO easily, and this daily moisturizer does not break me out. I will often use this in conjunction with the Jergens body moisturizer in between self-tanning sessions to avoid streaking and to make the tan last longer.

V: TO REAPPLY OVER MAKEUP: Kate Sommerville UncompliKated Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray (50 SPF)

I stumbled across this recently at the recommendation of a co-worker and am now obsessed. Have you ever applied a daily sunscreen, completed your makeup routine for say an afternoon barbecue and then avoided reapplying sunscreen later for fear of messing up your makeup you spent so long applying? You’re not alone! This spray will solve all of your problems. Not only is it 50 SPF, but you can spray it over your already completed make-up routine without fear of messing anything up. What more can you ask for?

I own all of these sunscreens and have used all of them at various times. If you’re going to have any in your arsenal, I’d say start with the basic Neutrogena Sunscreen and a Primer sunscreen (Hourglass or other brand) to ensure you’re covered every day of the week.  Shop any of these products below or click the links in the post!

Do you have any sunscreens you use on a daily basis that you can’t live without? Let me know in the comments below!

Three Steps to All-Day Foundation

3 Steps to All Day Foundation

My version of a living nightmare – It’s 10AM, and it’s been approximately 3-4 hours since I’ve completed my morning makeup routine. I’m washing my hands under the wonderful lighting in my workplace (or at the mall, in my own bathroom etc) only to find that my foundation is literally running off of my face or caking into patches. There really is nothing worse.

Maybe it’s my combo skin (oily t-zone, normal everywhere else) or the time of year, but I struggled with this for years. It’s embarrassing and downright frustrating.  I always felt like shouting, “I swear I know how to do my makeup”! If you’ve ever struggled with this or do struggle with this, I’m here to help with three easy steps!

There is one caveat however – one of the most important things you can do to create a lasting makeup base throughout the day is to have a great skin-care routine. Talk to your dermatologist or a skincare professional at your local Sephora and determine what products work best for you. Switching to Origin’s Checks and Balances and away from over-drying acne care products literally changed my makeup routine (and my life). Although I still struggle with occasional acne, my skin actually does better using fewer products that contain things like salicylic acid and benzyl peroxide.  I think it’s safe to say that you can probably get by with the wrong skincare routine, but using the right products will make your life a whole lot easier!

Here are my three steps to lasting foundation with all products linked below:

3 Steps to All Day Foundation

Why prime? Primer smooths pores and fine line while also creating a barrier between your skin and your foundation giving your foundation something to latch onto throughout the day.  It’s also an easy way to take care of common skin concerns. Is redness, dryness, oiliness or dullness an issue for you? There is likely a primer than can help correct your skin concern before you start going overboard with other products. Make Up For Ever makes my favorite primer and has a full line of different types of primers for different concerns. I use the hydrate primer all over because it helps decrease the amount of oil my face produces by making it properly hydrated in the first place. Many times you get oily it’s probably because your face is so dehydrated it’s actually over-producing oil. I also use the redness correcting primer on my nose and any blemishes.

NOTE: Make sure you always match ingredients in your primer to your foundation. At the very least, never pair an oil-based foundation/primer with a water based primer/foundation as the two will quite literally slide off one another.

3 Steps to All Day Foundation

This is a lesson I learned the hard way: If your foundation doesn’t say all-day wear, long-lasting, 24 hour wear or something to that effect, it is not meant to last all day. Okay, maybe you think that’s obvious! But, when I first got into makeup it didn’t occur to me to even be on the lookout for the “key words.” And I was sorely disappointed when my favorite foundation didn’t last the entire workday. My go to foundation for the last few months has been Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place and concealer is Kat Von D Lock-It. Both are so pigmented you can easily cover any skin concern.

Estee Lauder is a bit pricier however it’s well worth the money. One bottle usually lasts me 6-9 months using it 4-6 times a week because the formula is so good. I’ve been using for it 2 years and have yet to find another foundation I like better. They also have an amazing selection of shades, so it’s easy to match almost any skin tone.

I typically apply my foundation by dotting it around my face with a (clean!) finger and blending with a kabuki or oval brush.  I do use concealer for blemishes, under-eye, and highlight, but this isn’t necessary! A beauty sponge is the best way to blend concealer under my eyes, and I use a a concealer brush for blemishes.

3 Steps to All Day Foundation3 Steps to All Day Foundation

You might think I’m crazy, but I set my face three ways –

Under Eyes: I set my under-eye concealer with Kat Von D Lock-It Powder to keep it from caking or my mascara running. This also helps your under-eye from getting overly creasy! I’ve had this one pot of Lock-It Powder for 18 months and am only half-way through it! It lasts SO long.

All over + Blemishes: I use Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Foundation Powder to set the rest of my face. I KNOW it’s super unconventional to use a foundation powder to set liquid foundation, but try it once, and you’ll never go back to setting your face any other way! It’s the perfect way to ensure your liquid foundation doesn’t budget and is especially good for setting concealer over blemishes. Just make sure to tap your brush off and don’t use that much.

Final Step: Spray entire face with a setting spray like Mac Fix+ (gets rid of that “cakey” look from powder) or Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Control  – if you’re like me, you use both! If you’re going to choose one, I’d go with the Urban Decay De-Slick as it will actually keep your foundation on all day.

I’ve linked all of these products as well as my brushes below.
