Are you getting cabin fever yet? It’s getting to that point in winter where I have trouble remembering my days, and Kevin and I have been itching to get outside. It gets sooo easy to hibernate this time of year (especially when it’s SO cold out), and I have to admit I am totally guilty of spending way too much time inside during these winter months.

Kevin, on the other hand, has always LOVED hiking in the winter. And I have always thought he was crazy! But, he goes out no matter the temps and loves it. Like I’ve told you guys before, he hikes all year round but he especially loves the winter because the state parks are so empty, everything is so silent and everything looks so gorgeous when it’s covered by snow.

And, now that I’ve gone out with him, I totally agree.
We had a great time hiking together, falling in the snow, and spending time just US two. Given the very real risk of frostbite, we didn’t have our phones out besides to snap a few photos, and it felt really good to disconnect from everyone else. We’re already planning the next time we’re going out! If you’re looking for a great way to spend time with your guy, gal or fam and get out of the house this winter, head to your nearest state park! I promise you’ll love it!!

If you’re not up for hiking there are so many other ways to get outdoors this winter with your Sig O! You could…

  • Go to a hockey game!
  • Go ice skating!
  • Take a weekend trip to a cozy cabin up North!
  • Go snowshoeing (which I’ve heard is a KILLER workout)
  • Just play in the snow!
  • Go skiing/snowboarding
  • Go sledding!
  • Check out your local winter festivals (Minne has a TON)
  • Go on an outdoor run or walk (we do this 1-2X a week – walk not a run lol).

That being said, make sure you bundle up when you go out! When we went out this past weekend, it was a whopping 8º outside! But, we felt bundled up and prepared. Before going out, I knew I needed to grab some new gear from Backcountry because Kevin looks like abominable snowman every time he goes out, and I was no where near that prepared, lol!

I grabbed this pair of Merrell winter hiking boots and was SO impressed by them. Kevin told me to go with Merrell for any hiking – summer or winter. They are the most sturdy, waterproof and don’t slip AT all. And he was right, I had no issues. And, although they’re a bit lower on the ankle, you can tie them very tight so snow can’t get in and make your feet wet. I sized up .5, and they fit perfectly with thick socks!

I also picked up this new Patagonia puffer jacket, which was a hot topic in DM’s this weekend. Funny enough, when we met up with a few of our friends (the same ones who go backpacking in Europe and introduced me to Patagonia), our friend Brian was wearing the men’s version of my jacket – lol! So the style works for men and women and is DEFINITELY gearhead approved. It’s very lightweight but still warm enough that it kept me cozy on our hike! I love it so much I pretty much have stopped using my other jackets since I got it. I sized up to a S to layer over sweaters.

And, because hiking is all about layering (or so Kevin told me!), I had lots of layers in case we hiked on warm day! I wore this super cute olive green long sleeve and my puffer vest under my jacket. This long sleeve is so versatile, a great weight for spring and would be really cute with jeans too! I also wore fleece leggings and WISH I had grabbed a pair of snow pants. Lesson learned for next time. If you’re hiking in 20º+, you’ll be find in just leggings. And, of course, I had to wear my fleece lined mittens and beanie!

First time customers can get 15% off their orders at Backcountry.com with code LOMEYER15 (some exclusions apply!) – AKA you can save on pretty much everything I wore out to hike! Woooop!! ALSO, they just launched their huge end of season sale with 50% off Patagonia, Sorel, The North Face + more!! A similar version of my puffer is on sale & I LOVE these Sorels that are marked down too!

Also, I have to give a HUGE shout out to Backcountry’s customer service. If you were watching stories last week you know that I was a victim of a porch pirate Thursday. Well, they took ALL of my gear for this weekend’s hike. Since we had this planned a few weeks out we didn’t want to cancel (especially since we were hoping to see the fresh snow from Friday’s blizzard #priorities). Anyway, I messaged Backcountry on their chat messenger right away about it, and they overnighted a new package, no questions asked, the same day. I didn’t have to pay anything and the whole process took 5 minutes. It arrived Friday, and I had everything I needed for Sunday. Could not recommend them more for any outdoor gear you need!

xoxo

**Thank you for Backcountry for sponsoring today’s post. As always, all items were picked out by me and all opinions are my own.**

Happy Friday everyone!

What a crazy week! Did it fly by for you too? I swear it was just Sunday night, I blinked and now it’s Friday. After a very very busy weekend (talking minimal sleep but tons of fun), Kev & I are looking forward to having a few weeks of staying in the Cities. We’ve been traveling so much the last few weeks that’ll it be so nice to be home for a few weekends!

I have a super cute outfit lined up for today! But first, did you see that the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Catalogue came out this week?! Last year was my first time blogging the sale, and it was equal parts overwhelming and exciting (lol!). I’m doing a full post on how to prep and shop this amazing sale next week and have a few other special things lined up for it but feel free to peruse the catalogue now for some weekend reading! But, get excited!! This is literally the BEST sale of the year (and we all know I love a good sale), and it’s happening in just two short weeks! Nordstrom releases a ton of Fall arrivals all on major sale. Usually sale styles are end of season pieces but not in this case! It’s the perfect time to stock up on Fall and Winter essentials at insanely low prices! 😍

Now onto this outfit & a huge summer style trend – yellow! 💛

You may have noticed that yellow is having something of a moment this summer. It seems to be everywhere! But, it’s not a color that looks great on everyone. Given my fair skin and blonde-ish hair, it can sometimes make me look very washed out. So, when I came across this golden sweater tank at Nordstrom, I had a feeling it was the answer to my problem! Instead of washing me out, golden yellows tend to give fair skin like mine more of a glow and enhance my tan.

I love that this sweater tank is super lightweight. The weight, along with the darker hue, makes it perfect for wearing out at night and transitioning into the Fall! This is easily a piece you’ll get a lot of use out of and can wear year round, which makes it worth the price ($60)! It also works for the office or going out. You can layer a blazer or jacket over it for day wear and take it off come night. I don’t know about you, but I’m always a fan of tops that can do “double duty” (work for the office & play!).

I’m wearing a XS, and it fits TTS. I paired it with one of my fave pairs of shorts (only $29 – TTS) and some booties. Don’t be afraid to change things up. Booties and shorts are a great, unexpected combo! They’re a perfect pairing for a night out and really take any outfit to the next level! I left the top untucked here, but it also looks great tucked in like I did in this outfit.

I have a busy day planned out, and we’re headed to dinner tonight with friends! Have a great Friday everyone!

xoxo

3 Key Ingredients to the Perfect Date Night In or Out

Happy Monday everyone! It’s a new week! And let me first apologize for not having any new posts go up last week. As I discussed in my latest post, I was having technical issues with the laptop I brought back to Madison, which was part of the problem. After getting back to Minneapolis, I needed a few days to recoup and have “off”. I haven’t really taken time away from working since starting to blog full time, which I will admit isn’t really healthy. I hit a wall creatively, mentally and physically and was just plain exhausted. So I decided to give myself some days to recharge! As hard as it was, it was much needed. Thank you for understanding!

This past weekend, Kevin and I had two different date days. We try to have a date night or afternoon every weekend, but decided to double up this weekend since I was gone this past week, and he’s traveling for work much of this week. We went to a Christmas market in Saint Paul on Saturday, which was super cute (and super cold!). After we went to dinner at a restaurant in Saint Paul. Yesterday, we spent the afternoon watching our new favorite Netflix show Dark. I highly recommend this show if you’re into the supernatural or if you love Stranger Things/Westworld. It is rather creepy in parts, just to warn you! It’s also in German so you’ll be reading subtitles.

To get the most out of our date nights, I’ve implemented some self-imposed rules so that I can truly enjoy everything in the moment. It’s important to spend dedicated time with those you love especially during this busy time of year when it feels like we’re stretched so thin! And remember, you don’t need a significant other to have a date night. Some of my favorite date nights are with myself (and the cats obviously!). If this last week taught me anything, it’s that it’s SO important to “date yourself” and invest in self-care. You can only properly love others if you love yourself first!

3 Key Ingredients to the Perfect Date Night Out

The Perfect Outfit

I mean this is a fashion blog, so we have to talk about your outfit, right? In my opinion, the perfect date night outfit is one you feel confident in, but one that can accommodate your plans. For me, this always means an outfit that I can eat a lot in without feeling self-conscious in afterwards… lol! This off-the-shoulder, flare-sleeve body suit from Express is perfect for a holiday date night. It’s the right color and is a giving material so doesn’t feel too tight when it’s on. With high wasted jeans like these, this makes the perfect sexy, yet comfortable date night look.

Do something outside the box

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when you’re planning your date night. Going to the same restaurant or even doing the same routine (dinner + movie; dinner + drinks etc). Lately, Kevin and I have gotten into finding a local activity to do, then going somewhere for an appetizer and then even going somewhere different for dinner. Sure, it’s a lot of moving around. But it also gives us the ability to explore the city and different cuisine, which is important since Kevin is actively trying to expand his palette! On Saturday, we spent the afternoon at the Christmas Market, then went to a bar/restaurant for appetizers. Originally, we were going to head to a different restaurant for dinner but given the dropping temps we stayed where we were, got another beer and our entrees. Having flexibility in your date night makes it more relaxing and allows us to enjoy each other instead of worrying about following “the plan”.

If you’re in the Twin Cities area, here are a few websites we look at to see local events happening near us –

Unplug!

This is important for any type of date night – in, out or with yourself. It’s important to enjoy the company of who you’re with to the fullest extent, which means putting the phone and technology away! This doesn’t mean you can’t take any photos! Just wait to post them until the next day or later. Trust me, no one has ever died because you didn’t post a photo the second it was taken, and you’ll enjoy the day/night much more if you truly experience it in person rather than through your smartphone!

3 Key Ingredients to the Perfect Date Night In

Create relaxing environment

Part of the perfect date night in, whether with your significant other or with yourself, is creating a relaxing environment. Kev and I like to light our favorite candle (we’re addicted to Bath & Body Works scented candles!) or burn our favorite essential oils. We also like to bring out all of our fuzzy blankets and settle in on the couch for a movie or TV show while something cooks in the crock pot. The mix of the candles with the scent of what’s cooking in the crock pot creates a very homey, relaxing feel throughout the apartment!

Play a game or indulge in self-care

If you’re having a date night in with your significant other, pull out your favorite board game! Instead of just watching the TV, Kev & I love to play Scrabble or Monopoly (yes we’ll play just us two!). Playing a game really forces our attention to focus on the two of us and what we’re doing and minimizes distractions from the outside world (like social media or who might be texting!).

If you’re having a date night to yourself, try indulging in some self-care. I know a lot people find having a glass of wine with a warm bath to be the perfect relaxing night. For whatever reason, I’ve always preferred a hot shower with a body scrub to a bath. I personally think the movie What Lies Beneath scarred me when I was little, LOL. I’ll use a shampoo with an amazing scent, like Mermaid No.2 that literally smells like a Caribbean vacation. And I’ll often pair it with a body scrub like this coconut one from Bath and Body Works. I’ll follow up with a face mask and then often paint my nails as I read a good book or watch a chick flick.

Unplug!

Yes, repeating this because it’s even more important to unplug on a date night in since you have ready access to your phone, tablet and computer. To truly relax, turn your phone on airplane mode for an hour so you literally can’t receive texts or calls (they’ll arrive after you turn it off!). This way, you have no excuse to check your phone and can really focus on your date night or on your self-indulgence. Trust me, you’ll never realize how long an hour feels until you go a full hour without checking your phone or computer. It’s the best way to recharge!

How do you spend your date nights? Are there any “rules of thumb” you follow to have the perfect date night in or out?

I hope everyone has a great start to their week!! I’m sharing my last gift guide on Wednesday, so stay tuned!!

xoxo

PS notice anything different about my hair?! I added a few more inches with tape-in extensions while I was home in Madison. I’m loving them so far and plan to do a review in the future, once I wear them a bit longer!
