Today’s the day, folks! If you’re reading this, we’re on the plane heading to sunny Sanibel, FL ☀ To say I’m extremely excited would be an understatement. I’ve been shopping for weeks in preparation (duh) and literally haven’t been able to sleep lol!
Although I’ve been shopping the last month to prep for the trip, this week really marked the body-prep period for me. Sure, I’ve been working out more consistently, which we’ve already talked about in this post. But, the week before a beach vacay, I always schedule a wax and a spray tan.
Since we moved after our last vacay, I was determined to find a good studio up here for my wax. A good waxing studio should be clean, welcoming and knowledgeable. I came across Waxing the City, which has numerous locations across the country. Their reviews are top-notch so I knew it was a good place to go. I booked my bikini and full leg wax for 2 days before our vacay to ensure I had enough time to get a spray tan before we left. When discussing my appointment with friends and family, it became apparent that not a lot of people know the benefits of waxing and have questions. So let’s clear that up! I’m going to provide an in depth review of Waxing the City and their services along with answering some FAQs, so you can feel comfortable booking them for your next vacation!
I didn’t always wax before beach vacations. The first time I did was in 2015 and have waxed every year since then. And, although I’ve done a bikini wax before, this was my first year doing legs too. Here’s why I love to wax before a vacation – it’s one last thing to deal with while you’re on vacation because the hair doesn’t grow back for weeks. And, when it does grow back, it’s very fine and thin. No more worrying about razor bumps or unseemly hairs showing through, you’ve already taken care of it!
After our vacay last summer, I decided to never take another beach vacation without waxing my legs too. Besides avoiding shaving, there’s another reasons why I decided this. I am naturally Edward Cullen-pale. Like the color of the screen you’re reading this on. So getting a spray tan before showing my pale self on the beach is necessary just so people know I’m a human and not an alien from a planet called “the North”. But, there’s nothing more frustrating than paying for a tan and literally shaving it off throughout the vacation. Because that’s what shaving does – it exfoliates your skin and takes the first layer that has the tan with it. The result is your tan wearing off unevenly, which I have experienced more than once. So, that is another reason why I decided to wax before this vacation to avoid the streaky tan effect.
Why Waxing the City?
As mentioned, given you’re likely waxing some sensitive areas of your body, you want your waxing studio to feel comfortable and welcoming. When I walked into Waxing the City’s St Louis Park location, I was instantly greeted by a friendly, smiling receptionist. She walked me through the necessary forms to fill out and even complimented me! Service was quick and the Cerologist (what they call their estheticians), Ashley, was out to greet me and walk me back to the room in no time.
As you can see from the photos, the room itself is very clean and sterile. Everything the client touches is covered so that you have no fear of someone else’s body touching something you touch. The room even provides an outlet to charge your phone while you get waxed! Obviously, I loved that (lol!). Something that I really appreciated about Waxing the City was that they gave you disposable underwear to wear. You put them on and then place the towel over so that you’re pretty much completely covered except for the small space that’s getting waxed. This made me feel very comfortable and never exposed as I have sometimes felt at other studios.
While the appointment was going on, Ashley talked to me about my exfoliating routines and tips about avoiding ingrown hairs since I indicated that was sometimes an issue for me on the sign-up forms. This showed me that she had taken the time to thoroughly review my forms and cared about the service she provided! She kept up conversation outside of waxing education and put me at ease. There was no “awkwardness” about it at all!
After the appointment, Ashley walked me through after care and suggested products that would help with my sensitive skin.
I will 100% be back at this studio for my next vacation. I’m also tempted to go there for regular waxing after hearing that Ashley has been waxing her underarms for 12 months and now barely has any hair that grows back after 12 weeks. That’s amazing! And I’m totally jealous lol!
Does it hurt?
Yes, but there are ways to alleviate this. Take an ibuprofen 30-40 minutes ahead of your appointment. This will help with pain as well as any inflammation. Also, if you’re waxing your bikini area, try to avoid doing it during your period because that area is extra sensitive. If you’re lucky like me and have ALL vacations perfectly align with your period (sorry for the TMI), try to avoid waxing in the first 1-3 days when it’s the heaviest. Lastly, the pain is always the worst the first few strips then your body gets used to it, and it’s not as noticeable.
Can you tan after?
You should not tan before OR after waxing for 24-48 hours depending on how your skin reacts. You should wait at least 24 hours before sun-tanning or sunless tanning. Waxing literally pulls the hair out and leaves the pores wide open. This leaves your skin vulnerable for the first 24 hours since it is so exposed. However, waxing is an excellent way to prep for a sunless tan since it is a great way to exfoliate! Just be sure to wait a day before tanning.
How long does your hair have to be?
Ashley recommends as long as a grain of rice, which is typically 2-4 weeks of growth. I did a full 4 weeks of growth (my husband is a lucky man!) this time. The first time I did a bikini wax I did about 2.5 weeks and was left with some stubble. Longer hair actually means a smoother wax.
What if I get bumps/in-grown hairs?
There are a few things I’ve found and was recommended to combat this. You will likely get some bumps the first 24 hours post-wax, which is another reason to wax 2-3 days before your vacation. You can use a face toner on those areas like this one or witch hazel like this one. I personally use PFB, which was recommended to me by Ashley but have also used this in the past. Tend Skin is another way to diminish bumps or razor burn but can be harsh on the skin.
What’s the price?
This depends on your salon or studio but in my experience a bikini/brazilian can range from $35-75 depending on what you have done. Legs can be $50+. Studios like Waxing the City have packages where you can do both bikini and full legs for just over $100 making it more economical!
Waxing the City actually has a great FAQ page, so if you have questions I haven’t answered, head here.
So, have I convinced you of how necessary it is to head to Waxing the City before your next big vacation? I think I’ve convinced myself to go back for my underarms!
Next week I will only be doing one new blog post likely on Wednesday or Friday all on beauty products to bring on a sunny vacay (think make-up setting sunscreens, beachy lip colors etc). I’m going to try to be “on vacation” as much as I can so I can enjoy this time with my family! Kev & I are heading to Sanibel with my parents + my sister and her fam to celebrate my parent’s 40th wedding anniversary this year (pretty cool, huh?!)! I will be posting daily or twice daily on the ‘gram so be sure to follow me there to stay updated! And, as always, my stories will capture our daily activities!
Happy Friday everyone!
