Happy Monday everyone! It’s a new week! And let me first apologize for not having any new posts go up last week. As I discussed in my latest post, I was having technical issues with the laptop I brought back to Madison, which was part of the problem. After getting back to Minneapolis, I needed a few days to recoup and have “off”. I haven’t really taken time away from working since starting to blog full time, which I will admit isn’t really healthy. I hit a wall creatively, mentally and physically and was just plain exhausted. So I decided to give myself some days to recharge! As hard as it was, it was much needed. Thank you for understanding!
This past weekend, Kevin and I had two different date days. We try to have a date night or afternoon every weekend, but decided to double up this weekend since I was gone this past week, and he’s traveling for work much of this week. We went to a Christmas market in Saint Paul on Saturday, which was super cute (and super cold!). After we went to dinner at a restaurant in Saint Paul. Yesterday, we spent the afternoon watching our new favorite Netflix show Dark. I highly recommend this show if you’re into the supernatural or if you love Stranger Things/Westworld. It is rather creepy in parts, just to warn you! It’s also in German so you’ll be reading subtitles.
To get the most out of our date nights, I’ve implemented some self-imposed rules so that I can truly enjoy everything in the moment. It’s important to spend dedicated time with those you love especially during this busy time of year when it feels like we’re stretched so thin! And remember, you don’t need a significant other to have a date night. Some of my favorite date nights are with myself (and the cats obviously!). If this last week taught me anything, it’s that it’s SO important to “date yourself” and invest in self-care. You can only properly love others if you love yourself first!
Read on to see my tips to having the perfect date night in or out!
3 Key Ingredients to the Perfect Date Night Out
The Perfect Outfit
I mean this is a fashion blog, so we have to talk about your outfit, right? In my opinion, the perfect date night outfit is one you feel confident in, but one that can accommodate your plans. For me, this always means an outfit that I can eat a lot in without feeling self-conscious in afterwards… lol! This off-the-shoulder, flare-sleeve body suit from Express is perfect for a holiday date night. It’s the right color and is a giving material so doesn’t feel too tight when it’s on. With high wasted jeans like these, this makes the perfect sexy, yet comfortable date night look.
Do something outside the box
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when you’re planning your date night. Going to the same restaurant or even doing the same routine (dinner + movie; dinner + drinks etc). Lately, Kevin and I have gotten into finding a local activity to do, then going somewhere for an appetizer and then even going somewhere different for dinner. Sure, it’s a lot of moving around. But it also gives us the ability to explore the city and different cuisine, which is important since Kevin is actively trying to expand his palette! On Saturday, we spent the afternoon at the Christmas Market, then went to a bar/restaurant for appetizers. Originally, we were going to head to a different restaurant for dinner but given the dropping temps we stayed where we were, got another beer and our entrees. Having flexibility in your date night makes it more relaxing and allows us to enjoy each other instead of worrying about following “the plan”.
If you’re in the Twin Cities area, here are a few websites we look at to see local events happening near us –
This is important for any type of date night – in, out or with yourself. It’s important to enjoy the company of who you’re with to the fullest extent, which means putting the phone and technology away! This doesn’t mean you can’t take any photos! Just wait to post them until the next day or later. Trust me, no one has ever died because you didn’t post a photo the second it was taken, and you’ll enjoy the day/night much more if you truly experience it in person rather than through your smartphone!
3 Key Ingredients to the Perfect Date Night In
Create relaxing environment
Part of the perfect date night in, whether with your significant other or with yourself, is creating a relaxing environment. Kev and I like to light our favorite candle (we’re addicted to Bath & Body Works scented candles!) or burn our favorite essential oils. We also like to bring out all of our fuzzy blankets and settle in on the couch for a movie or TV show while something cooks in the crock pot. The mix of the candles with the scent of what’s cooking in the crock pot creates a very homey, relaxing feel throughout the apartment!
Play a game or indulge in self-care
If you’re having a date night in with your significant other, pull out your favorite board game! Instead of just watching the TV, Kev & I love to play Scrabble or Monopoly (yes we’ll play just us two!). Playing a game really forces our attention to focus on the two of us and what we’re doing and minimizes distractions from the outside world (like social media or who might be texting!).
If you’re having a date night to yourself, try indulging in some self-care. I know a lot people find having a glass of wine with a warm bath to be the perfect relaxing night. For whatever reason, I’ve always preferred a hot shower with a body scrub to a bath. I personally think the movie What Lies Beneath scarred me when I was little, LOL. I’ll use a shampoo with an amazing scent, like Mermaid No.2 that literally smells like a Caribbean vacation. And I’ll often pair it with a body scrub like this coconut one from Bath and Body Works. I’ll follow up with a face mask and then often paint my nails as I read a good book or watch a chick flick.
Yes, repeating this because it’s even more important to unplug on a date night in since you have ready access to your phone, tablet and computer. To truly relax, turn your phone on airplane mode for an hour so you literally can’t receive texts or calls (they’ll arrive after you turn it off!). This way, you have no excuse to check your phone and can really focus on your date night or on your self-indulgence. Trust me, you’ll never realize how long an hour feels until you go a full hour without checking your phone or computer. It’s the best way to recharge!
How do you spend your date nights? Are there any “rules of thumb” you follow to have the perfect date night in or out?
I hope everyone has a great start to their week!! I’m sharing my last gift guide on Wednesday, so stay tuned!!
PS notice anything different about my hair?! I added a few more inches with tape-in extensions while I was home in Madison. I’m loving them so far and plan to do a review in the future, once I wear them a bit longer!
